Time is a precious commodity. As music producers, composers, and artists, finding the time to nurture our creativity and craft can be challenging among daily distractions. However, this article shows two ways to help you reclaim your time and maximize your music creation process.
Limit Your Time on the Phone, Unlock Your Creativity
We live in an age where our smartphones have become extensions of ourselves, constantly demanding our attention. On average, people worldwide spend around 3 hours and 50 minutes daily on smartphones.(Source: Backlinko) For myself, I receive screen time notifications showing my daily usage at around 2 hours a day. This made me think about how I could spend my time better. I am always saying to myself that I wish there were more hours in the day for me to accomplish everything that I need to do. I get mad at myself for the days I don't work on music. However, my screen time is showing me I do have time to work on music. I need to take more control.
The first step for me was to put time limits on my apps clearing up extra time for working on music. I started by dedicating 30 minutes each day for music creation. I think for music creators, this is easily achievable each day. Whether it's experimenting with new sounds, creating melodies, or fine-tuning a mix, setting aside 30 minutes will allow us to immerse in the creative process without interruptions. Block that time off!

Reduce Distractions, Amplify Your Focus
Another effective way to combat distractions is by decluttering your digital environment. Start by unsubscribing from unnecessary emails that overload your inbox and disrupt your workflow. On your phone, reduce your notifications that are not useful for you.
This strategy outlined in the book Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy emphasizes taking back control of your time by doing something as simple as unsubscribing to emails that don't serve your important goals.
I immediately unsubscribed emails that are just cluttering up my inbox. I want more time to work on my craft. Making music should be the highest priority!

One area I focused on was unsubscribing from some music plugin companies. I was receiving so many emails from them so I decided to just keep connected to my top choice plugin companies. Currently, I'm at the point where I have a strong base of music libraries and synths so I don't need much more plugins at this time. If you are in the beginning stages of your journey as a composer, you will probably need to stay subscribed to the plugin companies in order to build your music library inventory and take strategic advantage of sales. As much as I love to see new products being released with their presets and walkthrough videos, I can waste alot of time drooling over them. It's time to do a digital declutter!
According to Brian Tracy, current research proves continuously responding and reacting to e-mails and notifications has a negative effect on your brain and shortens our attention making it more challenging for us to complete tasks. Therefore, in order for us to foster a better creative flow in music production, we need to reduce our distractions.
Conclusion, Embrace Efficiency
As music creators, our time is precious, and our creativity is invaluable. By adopting these time-saving strategies, we can unlock a world of potential within each day. Imagine the melodies, beats, songs, and film scores we will create when our craft is prioritized!
By limiting the time spent on our phones, decluttering our digital space, and applying efficient strategies to our workflow, we can transform our music creation process.

I also highly recommend getting the book Eat That Frog to help you with efficiency and procrastination! Get it!!
